Open Source Software for Paraglider and Hang Glider Pilots
Flight Log version 1.0 revision 6
Flight Logger is better than any other flight logging system for a variety of
reaons:
1. Its free and its online
Look at, edit, or log a flight at anytime or anywhere you have access to the Internet.
Look up information about Paragliding sites, pilots, wings, or manufacturers.
Check out recent flight reports.
2. Complete vs. Occasional flight log
Most fight log systems require you to log every flight in order to keep an accurate
count of your hours and flights. With Flight Logger, you can log as many or
as few flights as you want and in any order you want and still keep an accurate
count of your hours and flights. Begin using Flight Logger at anytime during
your flying career. Try out Flight Logger without abandoning your existing system.
Use flight logger only as an occasional flight report rather than as a complete
logging system.
3. Public or Private Flight Log and contact information
You can let all pilots view your log, only pilots in your region, or keep your flight log and/or pilot profile completely private
4. Pilot driven relational database
When you log a flight, no need to input any information about yourself, your
wing, or the site given that it already exists in the database. If a site, paraglider,
or wing does not already exist in the database, you will need to add them but
this only needs to happen once and by only one pilot. As pilots develop the
database, it will become easier and easier for future pilots to use.
5. Public Database
If you have no desire to use Flight Log to log your flights, you can use the
database to find information about sites, wings, wing manufacturers, pilots,
or general flight or site statistics. You can even create your own website or
desktop application that accesses this information. The database itself has
its own intrinsic value regardless if you have any need to use a flight log
or not. A pilot accessible SQL database with site, pilot, and paraglider information
is beneficial to the flying community at large.
6. Open Source Philosophy
My source code, written primarily in PHP (presentation layer written in HTML/Javascript,
data layer in MySQL, logic layer in PHP), will be publicly available and I encourage
and want other pilots to contribute to this project. I hope this becomes a public
pilot project and not merely my personal project. I gladly encourage suggestions
to changes in the look and feel of the website or feature requests or code contributions.
I have primarily concerned myself with functionality and not aesthetics at this
time so graphics and HTML artists would be greatly appreciated. This is also
not for profit, written by pilots for pilots. If the amount of people who would
like to contribute code becomes excessive, I will put it on sourceforge and
use a concurrent version control system so we don't step on each other's code.
The code base is transitioning to an object oriented base
7. The more its used, the better it will be
It will start off slow and the overall information won't be of much interest,
but as people use it, the more information will be available. You can gather
virtually any statistic you can think off, such as how many hours were logged
at a specific site compared to others or anything else your imagination can
think of. Primarily, even more than a flight log system, I’m hoping this
turns into the most complete database around for information important to pilots
8. Flight Logger is constantly improving
This project is in a stage of rapid development and if you have any suggestions or ideas about the project, please submit them.
